Spoilt for choice?

Italian food may be one of the most widely available in London, but when it comes to finding both quality and authenticity the choice dramatically narrows.

Sure, the classic well-known chains are on average a pretty safe bet, but it’s when you depart that familiar territory to uncover something more original that the real challenge begins.

Having spent a few evenings trying to track down Italian restaurants that wouldn’t be out of place in the peninsula, my choice would probably go to Locale, an unpretentious place in 53 Golders Green Road- though admittedly not the most convenient option for those who don’t live anywhere near NW11.

Without a doubt Refettorio, in 19 New Bridge Street, also ranks quite high up in my personal hit parade, in spite of the fact the atmosphere may not be as laid back as one would wish- and the price not the most accessible, either.

Finally, another one that didn’t disappoint is Cantina Italia, in 19 Canonbury Lane, again quite small and unassuming, but definitely worth a mention here.

Having said this, the quest must go on- and, needless to say, any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Italia Uno – 91 Charlotte Street. It’s a cafe and has the most amazing paninis.

Cheers for that- I’ll pay a visit very soon.

I’m quite partial to the panini they make at De Santis (11-13 Old Street), very tasty and great for lunchtimes.

Oh yes, I forgot that one- it is a little gem indeed.

When Tom and I were in London a year ago, we found Ristorante Sirena near the Bond Street Tube station. The service wasn’t much, but the food was excellent and we had a lovely time.

Glad Italia Uno got a reference… I like the ferrari that’s perpetually parked outside. And their ‘italian breakfast’ (eggs, great toast, and a stack of various cold meats)
