It was 150 days ago that the Guardian reported it to be the worst day of the year. University of Cardiff psychologist Cliff Arnall had done some calculations, and the Guardian printed a massive article about how optimism wins votes and Labour should get on the bandwagon as well as follow up articles about sad days.
Today, says Cliff Arnall, is the happiest day of the year. There was only a tiny little mention in the G., and I couldn’t even find it on their website to link to.
I think Londoners love sad days more than happy days…gives them a chance to complain.

Apparently.
I think its a amazing peice of architecture and an Icon of the 1970s brutalist Movement.

Designed by Hungarian Architect Erno Goldfinger, I think Trellick is as much a symbol of West London as the Portobello Road, The Grand Union and The Notting Hill Carnival.
Construction started on it in 1968, and in its almost 40 year old History its been hated, praised and in 1998, lt was given a Grade 2 as a listed Builidng. Not bad for a monstrosity I reckon.
I guess its a question of taste. The pebble dash on the exterior is a little off, but I always always know Im home when I see trellick hovering like a giant watch tower on the Horizon….

I must admit that sometimes I do feel a bit crazy, and I have been known to partake in a bit of talk therapy. I think everyone should do talk therapy at least once in their lives. It’s good to let it all out to a stranger so as not to bother your mates.
Hopefully this new scheme involving Psychological Treatment Centres (PTCs) will make available walk in mental health clinics similar to the walk in medical clinics we have now. The pilot project launches on Friday in Newham, east London. You can read more about this in yesterday’s Guardian here.

LONDON, June 19 — On one side is Mayor Ken Livingstone, known for his implacable campaigns against things that annoy him, like people who drive instead of taking the subway. On the other side are the pigeons of central London.
Mr. Livingstone, who calls pigeons “rats with wings,” has made it his mission since he took office in 2000 to eradicate them from Trafalgar Square, long the center of pigeon activity in London. He has been somewhat successful, reducing the population to about 1,800, from 4,000 by, among other things, closing down the last official pigeon-food-vending business, employing a pigeon-scaring falcon and making pigeon-feeding illegal in the square.

We are thrilled to announce ‘Canada Day in Trafalgar Square’ - Friday, June 30, 2006.
A celebration of Canada’s national day (though held on the eve), the event will bring together a lively program of Canadian entertainment and activities to suit all tastes.
The day will kick off at 2:00pm, when Trafalgar Square comes alive with Canadian sights and sounds, as well as street hockey - the summer version of Canada’s national sport. Canadian food, arts and crafts, street performers, tourism attractions and other activities will be showcased in and around the square.

Haircut, that is. I had a free hair cut today by a trainee in Central London. This is such a great thing. If you ever see “hair models wanted” in the window of a salon and are a bit adventurous, pop in and get the scoop. I’ve been going to my trainee for nearly a year (they train for something like 10). She’s never effed up, but had she done so, trained professionals are always on hand to dry your tears and sort out your hair. If you are cheap like me, a free haircut can make your week. The only drawback is that the trainee might take a bit longer than a professional. They want to be careful. Other than that, you get the shampoo, head massage and styling to boot.

If you are one of those people who respond to art with a resounding “Crikey, I could do that!” then maybe a looksee of some arts graduation shows will be just up your alley. Check out Film London’s website, specifically this page for details of degree shows around the Capital. The artists will be hanging about, so you can ask them how the did it. It’s harder than it looks.

When you hear the words ‘Late Night’, what time of day comes to mind?
I suppose it depends on your perspective. Late night as defined by, say, club-goers is surely different than late night as defined by… oh, hypothetically speaking… me. Late night in New York is surely not the same as late night in Kabul.
And then there is there is the definition of late night in Stratford, East London. I love this sign on the shopping centre there. 7 pm! Every single Thursday! What a convenience! It’s no wonder this cultural metropolis was chosen to host the Olympics.

Its not just getting out on the bike, or seeing beautiful women in short skirts. Its the ‘feeling alive’ sensation that is so lacking over the winter. England still in the worl cup helps of course.
How lucky we are and I bet so few of us really know it.
