As My Butt Sticks to the Chair
Last night the weather man used the term “heat wave.” But is it? Is it hotter and longer than last summer or the one before? I think memory is playing tricks on me.
I was in London in 1993 on holiday, and I recall freezing my butt off. Not having done the research and thinking like an American that London in July would have the same weather as, say, New Orleans, I had brought nothing but shorts and t-shirts. But, maybe I’m remembering wrongly.
Last summer seemed to last just a week. Then it rained.
Is it a heat wave? Is it global warming? Is it really hotter and longer? Has anyone out there done the research?

I think:
a)there is a myriad of research (e.g. Jan-Jun 2006 were the hottest Jan-Jun in USA since 1895), and that
b)research can be used to prove or disprove almost any theory about global climate change.
Science isn’t a strong point of mine so I suppose I could be convinced otherwise, but my instincts tell me that carbon emissions are bad. Maybe it’s just because George Bush seems to like them.
You are right about the science and statistics. I think it was Mark Twain who said something like “There are three types of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics.”
But there is something to be said about instincts. I feel it too. Human beings have become a force of nature, that is, our actions are beginning to affect nature on a mass scale. It’s kind of frightening how fast all of this is happening.
its a lot dryer. we have been hot before but not this god damn DRY! have you noticed the grass everywhere is dead? that doesnt happen a lot.
Yes…dry, brown grass. Where is England’s green and pleasant land?
