London’s 6th gift to the world
Here’s my choice for London’s gift to the world–do check out the 7 Gifts Round-up for some very interesting takes on this theme from Metroblogging cities around the world.
The London Black Cab!
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
1. It’s iconic: jumping into a black cab, like swinging onto a Routemaster bus, just gives you that great feeling of being in swinging London. So is the New York cab, but I propose that all the reasons after this one show the vast superiority of the London Hackney Cab.
2. It’s beautiful: it’s like a lovely fat black beetle, and the sight of a lit taxi light in a dark night is like a life ring to a drowning man.
3. The Knowledge: London black cab drivers know Jedi mind tricks, and they will use them to get you to your house!
4. It’s accessible: all black cabs take wheelchairs, and lots have things like high-visibility seat edges and handles, closed-loop systems for the deaf.
5. They take bikes: most black cabs will happily rescue the wet, tired or lazy cyclist (just careful with the paintwork, mate!)
6. They are made by a company called Manganese Bronze!
All hail the black cab! Please come to East London soon.

The Black cab has evolved whereas the Yellow Cab has been replaced by cars twice as long but half the capacity with the ride if highly sprung mattress. Add to that you can’t stand in them, not even the mini MPVs.
Yes! Yellow cabs are like riding in a tiny, padded cell.
Whereas black cabs are like riding in a smallish sitting room.
